Green Party T.D. welcomes funding for Waterford Animal Welfare Charities
Green Party T.D. for Waterford today welcomed funding for three Waterford Animal Welfare organisations to a total of €107,150. The announcement is made on the 3rd National Animal Welfare Awareness Day.
Animal Trust Fund, Waterford has been awarded €15,200, Waterford Animal Welfare has been awarded €37,550 and Waterford SPCA has been awarded €54.400.
The funding allocated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will focus this year on supporting charities involved in rescuing, protecting and rehoming dogs.
Welcoming the announcement, local Waterford T.D. Dep. Marc Ó Cathasaigh said “Volunteers and staff in our animal welfare organisations do vital and what can be harrowing work in rescuing dogs and I am delighted to see government support for our local Waterford animal welfare organisations who work so hard to make sure that rescue dogs get the best veterinary care to give them every chance of survival, and put in tremendous effort to find new and loving foster and forever homes for the puppies and dogs in their care. “
“The Programme for Government included a commitment to promote responsible pet ownership, and responsible pet ownership campaigns help in reducing the number of dogs abandoned. Some of the funding allocated will be dedicated to increasing public awareness about responsible pet ownership as well as guidance in pet care to help alleviate the animal welfare problems arising in the first place. In so doing this will reduce the pressure on dog rehoming shelters.”
Nationally, funding of €6 million has been made to support 101 animal welfare charities nationwide – an increase of €200,000 on last year.
