Green Party TD for Waterford, Marc Ó Cathasaigh has announced that €3,302,602 million will be provided to Waterford GAA for the continued redevelopment of Walsh Park. The funding will be provided to the Waterford County board for the further development of Walsh Park – building on the department’s previous allocation of €3.75m in 2020. The funding was announced today by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media, Catherine Martin as part of round two of the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure fund.

Speaking after the announcement, Deputy Ó Cathasaigh said:

“I’m delighted to welcome this grant of €3.3m under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund announced today by my Green Party colleague, Minister Catherine Martin. I’ve been working closely with Minister Martin to get this funding across the line. The works to date in revamping the Walsh Park complex between widening the pitch and improving the spectator facilities have been concrete steps along the road towards giving Waterford GAA the home it so richly deserves right in the heart of some of our city’s strongest hurling communities”

This latest grant is being provided in response to delays experienced by grantees arising from the pandemic and construction inflation.

“I was very happy to attend the first match on the reopened pitch earlier this year between Roanmore and Ballygunner. That was the wrong result for me on the day but this is a great result for everyone in the Waterford hurling and Gaelic football community. I’m very much looking forward to supporting the county board in every way possible in the coming years to complete the delivery of this project. This will allow Walsh Park to be a fitting backdrop for our Hurling and Camogie teams who have lit up the All Ireland series in recent years”
