Funding for the upgrade and development of nine Community Centres throughout Waterford.

Green Party TD for Waterford Marc Ó Cathasaigh welcomes funding for the upgrade and development of nine Community Centres throughout Waterford. The funding represents the largest ever capital investment in upgrading Community Centres and will see grants of between €25,000 to €300,000 provided to successful projects nationwide – nine of them in Waterford. The funding will be used to upgrade, renovate and refurbish Community Centres, Parish Halls and other community buildings across the country with communities in all counties benefitting as part of the investment.

Speaking after the announcement, Deputy Ó Cathasaigh said:

“The works planned under this scheme show the ongoing commitment of this government to community development and revitalising our communities, especially in rural Ireland. The Waterford projects announced today in Ballinameela, Dunhill, Abbeyside, Waterford City, Dungarvan, Ballysaggart, Kill and Carbally will be spent on projects like building upgrades, energy retrofits, improving disability access and providing new meeting rooms. Grants of between €25,000 and €300,000 were provided and I was very pleased that Carbally Community Development Project and Butler Community Centre received the highest amounts of €300,000 and €299.585.95 respectively.

The local community centre is at the heart of our communities in Waterford. It’s where our community groups meet, our children put on their shows, learn a new sport, where our older people gather and more recently, where remote workers spend their working day. This new funding stream will enhance these social hubs and provide for the needs of community groups in Waterford into the future. “

The new Community Centre Investment Fund forms part of a range of measures being undertaken by the Department of Rural and Community Development to support the community and voluntary sector, and to empower thriving, sustainable communities across Ireland.
