€182,400 funding for 22 heritage projects in Waterford

Waterford Green Party TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh has today welcomed €182,400 funding for 22 heritage projects in Waterford. The funding announced today by Minister Malcolm Noonan is allocated under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS), administered by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. This funding announcement follows the launch last week by Minister Noonan of Heritage Ireland 2030, a new national heritage plan which seeks to strengthen protection for our heritage in all its forms and provide support to those responsible for its care.

Speaking after the announcement, Deputy Ó Cathasaigh said:

“This is great news for places like Cappoquin, Ballymacarbry, Lismore and Dunmore East. Our built heritage is invaluable and must be preserved. It brings a uniqueness to our town streetscapes and brings our local history to life. These grants will allow people to carry out necessary and skillful craftsmanship in thatching and joinery, masonry and leadwork, to help conserve beautiful and landmark buildings in Waterford for future generations. The Built Heritage Investment Scheme will also provide employment to skilled specialists and tradespeople, ensuring a continued focus on conservation work and traditional craft.”

Through grants of up to €15,000, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) assists owners of heritage structures to meet their obligations to care for their properties. The funding can be used to undertake repair work, contributing to the upkeep and maintenance of heritage structures. Examples include roof, wall and joinery repair, draught-proofing windows, lime rendering and the repair of stained-glass windows.

The scheme is not limited to private dwellings and also provides assistance to a wide range of other important heritage structures – eligible buildings also include those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures and those in Architectural Conservation Areas and funding has been allocated to historic houses, church buildings and mills.
